The Line

The Line

The Line, an ambitious urban development project in Saudi Arabia, has been making significant
progress since its announcement in January 2021. The project, which is part of the larger NEOM
initiative, aims to create a linear city that stretches 170 kilometers through the desert and along
the Red Sea coast.

According to the latest official updates from NEOM, construction on The Line began in October
2022, with the first residents expected to move in by 2024. The project will feature a series of
interconnected communities, each with its own unique design and purpose, such as residential
areas, commercial districts, and entertainment hubs. The Line will be powered entirely by
renewable energy, with a focus on sustainable living and cutting-edge technology.
The city will have no cars or streets, instead relying on high-speed rail and autonomous vehicles
for transportation. Residents will have access to a wide range of amenities, including schools,
healthcare facilities, and green spaces.

In July 2023, NEOM announced that it had awarded contracts worth over $5 billion to several
global companies for the construction of The Line’s infrastructure, including underground
utilities, a high-speed rail system, and a state-of-the-art data center. The contracts also cover the
development of the city’s first residential area, which will accommodate up to 30,000 people.
Despite the project’s ambitious goals, some critics have raised concerns about its feasibility and
potential impact on the environment and local communities. However, NEOM officials maintain
that The Line will be a model for sustainable urban development and will create thousands of
jobs and opportunities for the region.
