Pittsburgh Knights announced that the organisation has aligned with virtual private network (VPN) service provider ExpressVPN as its newest sponsor.

In addition to becoming the team’s preferred VPN partner, ExpressVPN will also sponsor this weekend’s Knights VALORANT Invitational.

James O’Connor, President of Pittsburgh Knights, commented in a release: “We’re always looking to provide value to our fans. Our fanbase is young, tech-savvy, and always online. We’re excited to be able to share the privacy and safety benefits of ExpressVPN with them, and we really think they’ll like the effect it has on the performance of their games.”

This is ExpressVPN’s second recent esports partnership, following a June announcement with Dignitas. A virtual private network helps keep users online interactions private and secure by routing the connection through an external server. It can potentially help players and streamers avoid distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, for example.

The entire Pittsburgh Knights organisation will gain access to ExpressVPN’s services through this partnership. The Knights, a partner of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, currently fields teams in games such as Rocket League, SMITE, and Gears of War.

Harold Li, Vice President of ExpressVPN, also spoke on the agreement: “A VPN has multiple use cases for gamers and non-gamers alike, including privacy and security, content access and more. We are happy to extend the benefits of our service to more people through our partnership with Knights.”

Esports Insider says: As with the Dignitas partnership and other recent VPN deals in the space, this kind of sponsorship makes a ton of sense during the pandemic, with nearly all esports competitions happening online and people spending a lot more time online and playing games in general.
